The user registers with an online service and generates a new key pair on the device used - consisting of a private key and a public Fl002 key. While the private key is stored on the device and is only known on the client side, the public key is registered in the key database of the web service.
Subsequent authentications can only be performed by proving the private key, which must always be unlocked by a user action. There are various options, such as entering a PIN, pressing a button, voice input or inserting a separate two-factor hardware (FID02 token). Some operating systems, such as Windows 10 and Android, can now also act as security tokens themselves.
